The Labour Court recommended a redundancy lump sum calculated at five weeks’ pay per year of service, inclusive of statutory entitlements, for a worker made redundant by Medical Publications Ireland. The recommendation was signed on 14 January 2011. The worker, a credit control clerk from 1996 until her redundancy in 2010, sought six weeks’ pay per year in addition to statutory terms. She said the employer had not discussed an enhanced package. Medical Publications Ireland said it had met legal requirements, followed industry norms and could not afford enhanced terms. The Court considered an ex-gratia payment appropriate and recommended the five-week formula as a reasonable settlement.
