Labour Court recommends extra redundancy payment for Pierse carpenters

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The Labour Court recommended an extra redundancy payment for carpenters made redundant by Pierse Contracting: two weeks’ pay per service year, capped at €600 a week, in addition to statutory redundancy pay. It also recommended discussions on whether transferring the carpenters to other sites was feasible and appropriate. The Building and Allied Trades Union had sought four weeks’ pay per service year and transfers to sites where work was available. Pierse Contracting said it could not afford payments above statutory terms and retained the right to decide whether work was done by employees or subcontractors. The recommendation was signed on 9 August 2010.
