The Labour Court recommended that Irish Cement and the Group of Unions meet with an agreed facilitator for six weeks to seek agreement on restructuring proposals, including compulsory redundancies, contractor use, bonus and annualised-hours reductions, and shift changes. The recommendation was signed on 9 August 2010. Irish Cement said falling sales, prices and profits required labour-cost reductions. The Group of Unions said the company remained profitable and offered to discuss the issues under existing local agreements. The Court recommended that outstanding issues could return to it afterward and that neither side escalate the dispute in the meantime.
