The Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union (SIPTU) agree to discontinue Temmler Ireland Ltd’s shift-premium arrangements, with the terms to be discussed between the parties. The recommendation was signed on 25 February 2010. SIPTU said a 2001 agreement provided the same shift premium to all workers on a production line, whether they worked shifts or days. The company said the costs were no longer sustainable amid competitive pressures. The Court considered unnecessary shift working no longer appropriate or reasonable in current circumstances. The Court said that if the parties could not agree the terms, the matter could be referred back for a definitive recommendation.
