Labour Court recommends three months of talks on Aran Islands nurses’ allowance

The Labour Court recommended that HSE West and the Irish Nurses Organisation resume discussions for three months on the on-call allowance paid to public health nurses on the Aran Islands. The allowance was to continue during that period. HSE West intended to withdraw the allowance where a medical practitioner was present on the islands. The union argued that nurses still needed to be available to assist during emergencies, including when the doctor was elsewhere or unavailable. The Court recommended that the parties explore the effects on nurses providing care on the islands and seek agreement on compensation if the service for which the allowance was paid was discontinued. The recommendation was signed on 3 November 2009.
