Labour Court recommends €100,000 settlement for Bord Na Mona workers' lost earnings

The Labour Court recommended that Bord Na Mona pay €100,000 in full and final settlement of the Group of Unions' claim for about 320 workers who lost overtime and bonus earnings during outages at the West Offaly Power Station. The unions had sought €1.75 million, saying the outages cut peat purchases and reduced workers' earnings. Bord Na Mona cited substantial sales losses and said workers had been retained on minimum basic earnings or more. The Court said an agreement reached on 15 May 2008 had created an expectation that the claim would be addressed, and recommended that the €100,000 be divided pro rata among claimants whose earnings showed an established loss. The recommendation was signed on 12 October 2009.
