The Labour Court recommended that Upc and the Unite Services Industrial Professional Technical Union urgently resume talks on terms for introducing GPS units to the company’s fleet. The recommendation was signed on 5 October 2009. The proposed system would affect 50 technicians and 30 road staff in the greater Dublin area. Unite opposed the trackers, saying they invaded workers’ privacy and would offer little benefit in Dublin. Upc said GPS could improve customer service, measure working time and make routes more efficient, and offered a protocol limiting use of the data in minor industrial relations matters.
