Labour Court recommends talks on Bus Eireann cost-recovery plan

By Cathal Brosnan

The Labour Court recommended early discussions on Bus Eireann’s proposed cost-recovery plan for its drivers, to be facilitated by an independent chair agreed by the parties. Any defined issues left unresolved after the discussions were to be referred back to the Court. The recommendation was signed on 3 September 2009. Bus Eireann proposed reducing staff by 320, including 220 drivers, and offered voluntary retirement terms of two weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements. The National Bus and Rail Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said drivers were being asked to bear a disproportionate share of the savings and sought at least five weeks’ pay per year plus statutory entitlements.
