Labour Court rejects union’s pay and conditions claims but backs meal allowance offer

The Labour Court recommended that Centenary Co-Op Society concede none of the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claims, while recommending that the union accept the company’s offer to increase meal allowances and index-link them. The claims included higher bonuses and pay, harmonised overtime rates, increased sick pay and changes to shift premiums. The Court said the claims were cost-increasing and precluded by stabilisation provisions in the pay agreement associated with the Towards 2016 National Partnership Agreement. The recommendation was signed on 11 May 2009. The company’s offer concerned meal allowances for breakfast, lunch and tea; the Court did not recommend concessions on the union’s other claims.
