The Labour Court recommended an €8,000 ex-gratia severance payment for a part-time bookmaker made redundant by Tom O'Callaghan. The payment is in addition to statutory redundancy entitlements. The recommendation was signed on 9 February 2009. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought an enhanced package of three weeks’ pay per year of service. O'Callaghan argued the company had met its legal obligations and that there was no basis for an enhanced package. The Court criticised the lack of proper procedures, consultation and representation during the compulsory redundancy. It said ex-gratia payments in addition to statutory compensation were the norm in such cases.
