The Labour Court recommended that Hilton Foods and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept its interpretation of the engineers’ shift arrangements and premium. The recommendation was signed on 23 January 2009. The union opposed reducing the shift premium from 25% to 16.76%, alongside an extra 8.24% for on-call work. It argued that the new pattern increased coverage and required engineers to remain on call on days off. Hilton Foods said consultation had taken place, the arrangement had been reviewed, and overall earnings had not fallen. The Court said the arrangement involved three engineer crews, an on-call roster of one week in every six, and a 25% weekly premium overall.
Labour Court recommends both sides accept 25% shift-premium interpretation
