The Labour Court recommended revised redundancy terms for 93 workers after Cork Port Facilities Limited decided to close its Dockers' Section. Its recommendation was signed on 17 November 2008.
The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought higher ex-gratia payments, recognition of verifiable casual “black card” service and a larger closure payment. Cork Port Facilities Limited said its proposed package averaged just under €100,000 per worker and called the union's €80,000 closure claim unrealistic.
The Court said statutory redundancy under the relevant legislation met the union's claim. It recommended ex-gratia payments of €3,000 per year of service, counting up to two years of verifiable black card service for that calculation, with the existing 30-year cap retained. It also recommended increasing the closure payment to €25,000.
