In 2008, the Labour Court recommended that the National College of Art & Design place a job-sharing worker on the penultimate point of the Assistant Lecturer scale, recognising her service and duties. The recommendation was signed on 30 October 2008. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought Lecturer Grade 1 grading for the post, arguing the worker should have the same grade as the other job sharer and was qualified for promotion. The College, represented by the Irish Business Employers Confederation, said promotion required established procedures and criteria the worker had not met. The Court said the job-sharing arrangement was an ad hoc pilot and that promotion without following the established procedures would be inappropriate. It recommended placing the worker on the penultimate point of the Assistant Lecturer scale from the date of the recommendation.
