Labour Court recommends flexible parental leave for Cork nurses

The Labour Court recommended that HSE South implement the Irish Nurses Organisation’s proposal to let nursing staff at Cork University Hospital take parental leave in blocks of days, with replacements provided to the maximum extent possible. The recommendation was signed on 22 November 2007. The union said the existing five-day minimum was too restrictive and that other hospitals and disciplines at the hospital offered more flexibility. HSE South cited staffing shortages and the risk to patient care, while saying it could pilot day-based leave in agreed areas. The Court noted the sides agreed on a pilot approach but differed over replacement cover.
