The Labour Court recommended that community registered nurses and locum public health nurses in Sligo and Leitrim need not provide planned weekend on-call services beyond their contracted Monday-to-Friday hours. The recommendation was signed on 16 August 2007. HSE West said contracts obliged some staff to work weekends as demand for public health nursing services increased. The Irish Nurses Organisation argued that the employer had changed contractual arrangements and was willing to discuss weekend cover. The Court said nurses could opt to work planned essential weekend services at the agreed fixed rates.
