The Labour Court recommended that Mayo County Council delay implementing its plan to withdraw from refuse collection and privatise the service until discussions with Services Industrial Professional Technical Union were complete. The recommendation was dated 31 October 2006. The union opposed privatisation and sought talks on a strategy to grow the service’s customer base. The Council cited financial constraints and proposed redeployment and compensation averaging approximately €32,000 per worker. The Court accepted that the Council could consider privatisation, but recommended discussions on the workforce implications before implementation, to be completed within two months.
