In 2006, the Labour Court recommended that the Commissioners Of Irish Lights pay marine ratings the agreed 8.9% increase and accept the proposed Annualised Duty Days Scheme, subject to a maximum liability of 28 days at retirement. The recommendation was signed on 25 September 2006. Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union opposed the pension payback terms. It said members had increased productivity by over 50% since the 2000 scheme and that absenteeism was below 0.3%. The Commissioners said cost-saving measures were appropriate in return for the benchmarking increase. The Court noted assurances that repayments would not exceed 28 days and that the scheme would be operated with sensitivity and discretion.
