The Labour Court recommended that Glencullen Commercial Vehicles Limited pay a worker €45,000 in addition to payments already made, in full and final settlement of a redundancy dispute. The recommendation was dated 2 August 2006.

The worker had 14 years’ service when he was made redundant in December 2004 after the company closed its van centre at Citywest, Dublin. He sought an enhanced package, saying a proposed job at Renault Liffey Valley came with substantially worse pay and conditions. The company said Renault Liffey Valley was a separate business and that industry-wide regulatory changes led to the closure. It also said the worker found another job soon after his redundancy.

He had received statutory redundancy payments totalling €14,729.10, including a €2,670 goodwill payment. The company had offered a car and an additional €5,000, both of which he refused. The worker sought about €72,000, calculated at six weeks’ pay for each year of service. After considering the claim, the Court recommended the additional €45,000 payment, payable without delay.
