The Labour Court recommended a defined contribution pension scheme for workers represented by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union at Murphy’s SuperValu in Kenmare. The recommendation was dated 7 October 2005. The scheme would have 4% contributions from the company and 4% from employees, and was to be finalised within four months. The Court also recommended aiming for two consecutive days off at least once every five or six weeks for workers on five-over-seven rosters, with reasonable flexibility subject to business needs. It upheld management’s right to offer fixed, non-rotating hours. The Court considered the company’s commitment to allow representation by a colleague or union representative sufficient to meet the representation claim. It did not recommend the union’s claim for a 7.5% pay increase, finding existing rates were not out of line with appropriate standards.
