The Labour Court recommended enhanced redundancy terms for 100 United Airlines staff in Dublin, including five weeks’ pay per year of service inclusive of statutory redundancy where applicable. The recommendation was dated 4 October 2005.

United Airlines had announced it would close its Dublin premises and outsource the work to India and Poland. The Communication Workers Union sought a redundancy package of nine weeks’ pay per year of service, a retrospective cost-of-living increase and improvements to travel payments, flight benefits and references. The company challenged the Court’s jurisdiction, but the Court found the statutory conditions for investigating the dispute had been met.

The Court also recommended a 2.5% salary increase retrospectively from 1 July 2005 and withdrawing the condition that ex-gratia redundancy payments depended on a satisfactory dependability and performance record. It recommended accepting United Airlines’ offer on the union’s other claims.
