In 2005, the Labour Court recommended improved redundancy terms for workers affected by Merops (Nutrition) Limited's planned manufacturing closure. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought six weeks' pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements and removal of the proposed cap. The company had offered two weeks' pay per year, a 52-week cap or statutory entitlement if higher, and a €50,000 fund for workers affected by the cap. The Court recommended three weeks' pay per year of service on top of statutory entitlements, a 78-week cap, retention of the €50,000 fund and a minimum of four weeks' pay for affected workers. It said the terms would provide a fair resolution and support an orderly winddown. The recommendation was dated 2 June 2005. The company employed about 65 workers at its Ballymount, Dublin premises.
