Labour Court refers Bracegrade brick-panel dispute to union congress

The Labour Court recommended that the Building And Allied Trades Union ask the Congress of Trade Unions to address a dispute with Bracegrade Ltd over precast brick-faced panels. The recommendation was signed on 5 May 2005. The union said the panels were erected by general operatives rather than bricklayers, affecting its members’ work and employment. Bracegrade said panel erection was work done by another union’s members and that the issue was an inter-union demarcation matter. The Court said the union should seek a decision through Congress procedures, after which the parties should discuss the matter and could refer it back to the Court.
