The Labour Court recommended that the supervision allowance for academic staff in Institutes of Technology be adjusted by benchmarking increases, but said the acting-up allowance should not receive the increase. For the union's claim to upgrade Lecturer (Structured) posts to Senior Lecturer One, the Court recommended a job-evaluation exercise, followed by discussions and possible referral back if the parties could not agree. The Department Of Education & Science and the Teachers' Union Of Ireland were parties to the dispute. The union had sought increases to both allowances and the post upgrade. The Court said custom and practice in similar public-sector employments was the best guide for the allowances, and noted increased duties and responsibilities in the Lecturer (Structured) grade. The recommendation was signed on 18 April 2005.
