In 2005, the Labour Court recommended mileage and eating-on-site allowances in a dispute between Mayo County Council and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The claim concerned general operatives and waterworks sewage caretakers seeking subsistence and meal allowances. The Court said the issues affected similar worker categories in every local authority and had national implications. It recommended appropriate mileage payments for workers required to use their own transport from their established base to work, and considered an eating-on-site allowance appropriate. It did not recommend concession of the subsistence or meal allowance claims. The recommendation followed a hearing in Castlebar on 23 March and was signed by Kevin Duffy on 8 April 2005.
