The Labour Court recommended that Irish Ferries improve its exit offer to €50,000 for a worker dismissed after alcohol-related disciplinary issues. The recommendation, dated 1 February 2005, said dismissal was not unreasonable under the company-union disciplinary agreement and reinstatement was not warranted. The worker, who had 30 years’ service, was dismissed after a pattern of breaches, according to Irish Ferries. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought voluntary redundancy worth about €110,000, while the company had offered statutory redundancy of about €35,000. The Court recommended discussions on how to distribute the €50,000 to benefit the worker and his family.
