The Labour Court recommended that Dublin City University pay a worker €2,000 in compensation, including a shortfall in notice, after his employment was terminated during probation. The recommendation was dated 14 October 2004. The university cited concerns about his performance, workplace relationships, initiative, attendance and absence reporting. The union said management had failed to follow fair procedures and had denied him a chance to pursue a grievance with representation. The Court considered management’s procedures reasonable and said the worker’s conduct during his final probationary assessment influenced the dismissal. It also found that the appeal hearing did not take place, denying him an opportunity to make representations.
