Labour Court backs management grading proposal but recommends early retirement package

In 2004, the Labour Court recommended that Local Authorities accept management's proposed grading approach for senior fire officers, while also recommending a voluntary early retirement package sought by the Irish Municipal, Public And Civil Trade Union. The Court said the union's proposed grading structure would not fit the management arrangements introduced under the Better Local Government Agreement. The union argued that the restructuring would increase officers' workload and responsibility and sought an exit option for officers unwilling to enter the new structure. Management said the Fire Service should fit into local government structures and opposed an early retirement package. The recommendation was signed on 12 July 2004.
