The Labour Court recommended that Teagasc pay each of two farm workers €10,000 immediately and a further €10,000 on 1 January 2005, in full and final settlement of their claim for the loss of long-standing regular and rostered overtime. The recommendation was dated 25 June 2004. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought compensation after Teagasc closed the piggery at Mellowes College in Athenry and reassigned the workers to other farm duties. The union said they lost all their regular overtime, reducing their household income by 40%. Teagasc cited financial losses and cost-cutting measures, including a 25% reduction in overtime across the organisation.
