The Labour Court recommended further discussions before Irish Distillers Limited took action on the redundancy of two drivers at its North Mall Distillery in Cork. The talks were to consider whether full-time work was feasible and be completed within four weeks. Its recommendation was dated 1 June 2004. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that an earlier recommendation entitled the drivers to retain their jobs on a personal basis and that alternative posts might be available. Irish Distillers Limited said it did not guarantee them jobs for life and that the plant closure changed the circumstances. The Court agreed it did not guarantee continued employment, but found there had been insufficient discussion before the redundancies were announced.
