The Labour Court recommended compensation payments for clerical staff as part of Independent Newspapers’ proposed restructuring: €3,000 when the agreement was accepted, €2,000 when staffing fell by 40 positions and a further €3,000 when it fell by 95 positions. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought higher payments as the company planned voluntary redundancies and outsourcing. The Court also recommended that stamp duty, if applicable, be paid as a relocation expense, and that leave cover come from existing resources, with the company responsible for any shortfall. The recommendations were dated 26 February 2004 and were to go to a union-member ballot as a package.
