Labour Court backs Northern Area Health Board’s calculation of marriage leave

The Labour Court recommended that the Northern Area Health Board’s calculation of marriage leave was correct. The recommendation was dated 4 February 2004. The Building And Allied Trades Union sought three days of marriage leave for a worker who had 23 days’ leave in the year of his marriage. It argued that three special leave days under the 1997 analogue agreement should not count toward the 24-day cap. The Board counted those days within the 23 and offered one additional day. The Court said the circular capped annual and special leave at 24 days and found the Board’s interpretation correct. The worker was entitled to one day of marriage leave in 2001.
