In 2003, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann pay €2,000 to each of 12 clerical staff who lost Sunday overtime on the Maynooth line. The recommendation was dated 1 December 2003. The dispute followed the introduction and later closure of Sunday commuter services. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said staff had been assured the Sunday work would continue and sought compensation for lost earnings. Iarnrod Eireann said low revenue forced the closure and denied giving a guarantee. The Court found that Sunday working had been presented at recruitment as a regular feature of the line’s planned growth, which did not happen. It recommended compensation for each affected claimant.
