The Labour Court recommended that Newline Dies Limited offer a worker an additional €7,500 in settlement of a redundancy claim. The recommendation was dated 21 November 2003. The worker, represented by Irish Print Group (SIPTU), sought an industry-standard redundancy package after his position was made redundant following the introduction of new lasering technology. The union said he had been selected personally and other employees continued doing his duties. Newline Dies said the position had become redundant for economic, technical and organisational reasons and that he lacked the skills for alternative work. The Court did not recommend the union’s claim in full. Taking account of the worker’s service and the circumstances of the redundancy, it recommended an additional ex-gratia payment of €7,500, to be paid within three months.
