The Labour Court recommended that Masterair Sales Limited give the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union advance notice and negotiate redundancy terms before implementing any future redundancies. The recommendation was signed on 17 October 2003. The union sought statutory redundancy entitlements plus six weeks’ pay per year of service for future redundancies. The company said two general operatives had already volunteered to leave on its terms and that it could not afford additional costs. By the time of the recommendation, the workers had left voluntarily and the company said it was no longer planning redundancies. The Court declined to recommend a payment scheme without a live dispute over severance terms. It recommended that the union receive sufficient notice to negotiate relevant matters, including redundancy payments, before any future redundancies are implemented.
