The Labour Court recommended that a worker redeployed by Smurfit Corrugated Cases be offered a choice: keep his current salary, including the shift premium, until it matched salaries in the design area, or accept a lump sum equal to the remainder of an earlier company offer. The recommendation was dated 22 September 2003. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought to preserve the premium after the worker moved from a two-shift despatch clerk role to a day job in the design department. The company had offered €20,000 during negotiations, but the union rejected that offer.
