In 2003, the Labour Court recommended that Iralco and Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union review the possibility of an agreed sick-pay scheme in March 2004. The union said a scheme had been agreed in 1998 and that absenteeism had fallen. Iralco said its worsening financial and trading circumstances made a scheme inappropriate at the time, citing 74 recent redundancies. The Court heard the dispute in Athlone on 26 August and dated its recommendation 8 September 2003.
