The Labour Court recommended that Carlow Institute Of Technology offer a part-time lecturer seven teaching hours a week on a pro rata basis, in a recommendation dated 23 June 2003.
The Teachers Union Of Ireland sought restoration of an eight-hour Lecturer 1 contract, arguing that an agreement entitled the lecturer to that status once he reached eight teaching hours a week. The Institute said the Department of Education and Science had refused approval and offered seven hours on a pro rata basis.
The Court cited a breakdown in trust and substantial differences over the agreement’s meaning. It recommended that the union accept the Institute’s offer, which management said would provide a regular income until retirement.
