In 2003, the Labour Court recommended that Bord Na Mona increase a proposed one-off payment to €36,000 gross and set an all-in rate for its Horticultural Fleet drivers at €1.40 per load mile. The proposal concerned a revised payment system, including removal of the trailer exchange allowance. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the earlier €1.38 rate represented a 21% reduction in the drivers' previous average and sought at least €1.45. The company said its internal transport costs were too high and the conciliation proposals were a reasonable way to resolve the dispute. The Court issued its recommendation on 7 March 2003 after hearing the case on 19 February.
