The Labour Court did not recommend compensation for 40 Tesco Ireland employees in Cavan Town after the Council introduced charges in the public car park beside the store. The recommendation was signed on 4 March 2003. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the charges affected workers' earnings and sought weekly spaces reserved for Tesco staff. Tesco Ireland said free parking had never been a term of employment and that the Council applied charges across public parking in the town. The Court said it was unreasonable to expect the company to pay for a change made by the Council.
