In 2002, the Labour Court recommended a two-week trial of a coin-processing machine in a dispute over pay for House Porters handling punt coinage. The recommendation was signed on 5 December 2002. The Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union sought a 10% pay increase, arguing the coin handling was physically demanding extra work. The Central Bank Of Ireland said each porter had received €2,032 for flexibility and co-operation with the euro changeover and withdrawal of old currency, and that the additional duties took about half an hour a day for two porters. The Court recommended the trial proceed without delay, followed by discussions on whether there was justification for the claim. Either party could refer the issue back to the Court if they could not agree.
