Labour Court recommends wider talks on Ucd Students' Union vacancy dispute

In 2002, the Labour Court recommended that Ucd Students' Union and Services Industrial Professional Technical Union hold comprehensive discussions on wider workplace disputes, with a vacancy dispute addressed in those talks. The dispute concerned a vacancy at one of the Students' Union's science shops. The union wanted promotional posts offered first to supervisory grade C staff based on seniority and service; the employer said it wanted to select the best available personnel and advertise internally before turning to external applicants. The Court said management's business requirements were changing in light of the organisation's financial state and questioned whether staff had received enough information and opportunity to discuss its plans.
