In 2002, the Labour Court recommended that Limerick County Council and Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree a pro-rata sanitary service allowance for time plumbers spent working on live sewers. The union sought an allowance for plumbers who used con-saws and worked with raw sewage in confined spaces. The Council said the work was part of their normal duties and opposed the cost-increasing claim. The Court said the allowance compensated for unpleasant conditions such as work in live sewers and saw no valid reason to treat workers doing similar work differently. The recommendation was signed on 25 November 2002.
