Labour Court rejects extra redundancy and loss-of-earnings payments for 28 former security officers

The Labour Court recommended against an ex-gratia redundancy payment for 28 former Intel-based security officers and against compensation for those who moved to other sites. The recommendation was signed on 19 August 2002. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a compensation package, citing payments to construction workers affected by cutbacks at Intel and the loss of an expected 20% wage increase for staff who moved. Provincial Security Services Limited (PSS) said it had no precedent for payments beyond statutory redundancy and had tried to find alternative work. The Court concluded that compensation for loss of earnings was not justified because pay rates were site-specific and not transferable.
