In 2002, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann pay each of five claimants a once-off €5,000 to settle claims over grading, station responsibilities and Sunday rest-day work. The recommendation was dated 19 July 2002 and named the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union as the union party. The union sought parity with Connolly colleagues and a day in lieu for each Sunday worked. The company said duties, conditions and work locations would not change. The Court said a company letter could be read in more than one way and had created an expectation of regrading; it also accepted that the claimants suffered no monetary loss from Sunday work. The recommendation included a direction to ensure the workers received their contractual rest days.
