The Labour Court recommended discussions between Iarnrod Eireann, the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the National Bus and Rail Union on merit-based selection for ganger posts, with seniority as a deciding factor for equally suitable candidates. The recommendation was dated 18 July 2002. The Court recommended that the existing seniority arrangement continue while the parties discussed a new process. Two workers previously passed over should remain in acting roles and be appointed to the next suitable vacancies. It also recommended that contract staff with at least four years’ continuous service be absorbed into the permanent workforce on a once-off basis.
