The Labour Court recommended that Superquinn and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union (SIPTU) discuss an agreement introducing flexibility measures similar to those linked to pay increases for bacon-hands. The dispute concerned butchers’ claim that their long-standing pay differential had eroded. The recommendation was signed on 6 June 2002. Superquinn said no established differential existed and linked the bacon-hands’ increase to greater flexibility. The union said butchers had received a differential since the company opened in 1960 and sought its restoration.
