In 2002, the Labour Court recommended that Atlas Aluminium Limited reinstate bonus and service-related payments immediately, after a dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation was dated 3 May 2002. The union said the cancelled bonuses formed part of workers’ pay and that members had cooperated with cost-cutting measures. Atlas Aluminium cited serious financial difficulties. The Court also recommended consultation on business plans and said outstanding Programme for Prosperity and Fairness payments should be arranged as company finances permitted; those claims should be deferred until the financial position improved.
