In 2002, the Labour Court recommended against a claim by the Technical, Engineering And Electrical Union for higher pay and an increase in the two-cycle shift allowance at Finsa Forest Products Limited’s chipboard plant in Scariff. The recommendation was dated 3 May 2002. The union sought to raise the allowance from 16% to 20% and said contract workers doing the same work received over €3 an hour more. The company said contract workers’ pay was a matter between them and their employer and it could not concede the claim. The Court considered the claim debarred under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness as a cost-increasing claim, and noted the company’s conciliation offer remained open to union members.
