In 2002, the Labour Court recommended against a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union to regrade coastal defence workers at Iarnrod Eireann. The recommendation was dated 3 May 2002. The union sought Mobile Ganger rates for five workers and extra pay for a supervisor, saying the workers were skilled and continuously on call. Iarnrod Eireann said the group had received substantial increases under a reorganisation agreement and Mobile Gangers had supervisory and safety responsibilities. The Court said category regrading claims were inconsistent with the pay determination arrangements accepted by the parties and saw no basis to recommend concession.
