The Labour Court accepted that a redundancy existed at Itw Hi-Cone’s Mallow plant and recommended that the company and the Amalgamated Engineering And Electrical Union continue discussions to seek agreement. The recommendation was dated 26 April 2002. Itw Hi-Cone proposed making one of three mechanical craftsmen redundant as part of a European restructuring. The union opposed the proposal, saying the company should consider alternatives, including a reduced working pattern, and address the effect on the worker’s pension. The Court set four weeks for discussions and said it would make a definitive recommendation on request if the parties did not agree.
